A note from the Founder, Dr. Laura Vanderberg
Ukraine, endearingly called “The Native Mother” by Ukrainians, did not prepare for an extended war, and she did not welcome, nor provoke, a violent invasion. In the midst of the ongoing violent attacks by Russia, which began in 2014 and escalated on February 24, 2022, my former students, my fellow teachers, and my colleagues defend their land, homes, language, culture, history, families, and lives. In real time, they are making choices to preserve their identity and hopes for a peaceful future, while experiencing horrific human rights abuses. The Defenders of Ukraine’s Territorial Defense voluntarily leave their families, and sacrifice their bodies to hold the front lines, a physical line of democracy that protects their citizens and, effectively, the promise of democracy and sovereignty for European countries. The Defenders do not have adequate body armor, personal supplies, nor medical supplies. They are holding the front lines without defensive equipment, without chest plates, without tourniquets. We are outfitting them so that they can save Ukraine, and also save themselves. Please see my friends talking about the Defenders in their own words. The lived experiences of my friends bring the urgency to life, and I want you to join our Global Community Corps to support the preservation of Ukraine.
